Cabugao Grande, or more often called by locals as Cabugao Dako, reminded me so much of El Nido. The huge limestone rocks accentuating the white sand beach looks very much like Shimizu Island. Cabugao Grande is located just north of Cabugao Gamay. It is very adjacent to each other that experienced swimmers can swim from one island to the next for about 20-30 minutes. I would not suggest non-swimmers to do this as it may get very tiring. |
Although the island is very small, there are locals residing in it. Our tour guide The Gigantes Experience has partnered with the locals in bringing in more tourists to their island. They initially constructed several cottages, bathrooms and toilets, set-up several tents, and created a bar in the island but these were severely damaged by typhoon Yolanda. They are in the process of re-building their initiatives and hopefully, will re-open soon for guests. |
Based on my observation, the beach is ideal for swimming as it is less rocky and more sandy. As you go deeper, you'll notice dead corals, which may have been caused by the typhoon but as you go even deeper, you will notice rich corals where you can snorkel and enjoy the company of a wide variety of marine life. |
At low tide, it seems possible to roam around the island, particularly on the right side when you are facing the white sand beach, but note that the island is surrounded by a lot of limestone rocks so ready your mojos and booties. |
Since the island is pretty much deserted (as of now as later on, presence of tourists and facilities will definitely improve), there is not much to do. If you are planning to spend several hours in Cabugao Grande, I suggest you bring your snorkelling gears, googles and fins so you could explore the nearby waters. Bring toys, too, if you have kids and kids-at-heart, maybe beach volleyball, card games, board games, etc. so you won't get bored.
